Taco Tuesday in Walkerville: The Grand Cantina, Plus Where to Find Great Tacos in Windsor and Detroit
Guests ask us all the time where to get tacos. Here's our honest answer: our go-to Taco Tuesday in Walkerville, the birria we keep coming back to in Windsor, and the award-winning tacos worth crossing the river for.
The short version
Taco Tuesday in Walkerville: The Grand Cantina. Order the ODB.
Best birria in Windsor: a tie between Rico Taco and Mi Casita.
Award winner in Detroit: Tacos Wuey, 3970 W. Vernor.
$2 birria in Detroit: Taco Madre Taqueria. Cash only.
Taco Tuesday at The Grand Cantina
The Grand Cantina is at Wyandotte Street East and Devonshire Road, a short walk from our houses, and it's our pick for Taco Tuesday in the neighbourhood. It's lively and fun, with good drinks, and an easy night out without leaving Walkerville.

Let's be honest: these aren't traditional Mexican street tacos. They're creative, loaded, Windsor-style tacos, and that's part of the fun. Our favourite is the ODB: barbacoa beef with queso, pickled onion, roasted corn, corn chips and a tequila lime crema. Check their Instagram for this week's Taco Tuesday deal.

The best birria in Windsor: a tie
We can't pick between Rico Taco and Mi Casita, so it's a tie.
- Rico Taco is the pick if you want an outdoor beer garden vibe. It's a taco truck that often sets up at the WindsorEats Food Hall, so check their social media for where and when.
- Mi Casita is a sit-down spot on Wyandotte Street East downtown. It's not in Walkerville, but it's a quick drive or ride.

New taquerias to watch
We're hearing good things about some up-and-coming taquerias in Windsor. If you own one, get in touch. We'd love to try your tacos and send our guests your way: hello@distilleryhomes.com.
For truly the best tacos: Mexicantown, Detroit
If you want truly authentic tacos, cross the river to Mexicantown in Southwest Detroit. It's a short trip from Walkerville, and with the Gordie Howe Bridge path now open, you can even bike there. Bring your passport. Two spots stand out.
Tacos Wuey: the award winner
Tacos Wuey at 3970 W. Vernor is the taqueria everyone's talking about. Chef Eddie Vargas opened it in July 2025, and the birria is his father's recipe from Jalisco. In just over a year it has racked up:
- A spot on the New York Times 2026 list of America’s 50 favourite restaurants, one of only two Michigan restaurants on the list.
- Hour Detroit’s Best New Restaurants 2026.
- First place in the judges’ bracket at the 2026 Detroit Taco Showdown at Eastern Market, for its beef birria taco, after finishing second in 2025.
- No. 2 Best New Restaurant for 2026 from the Detroit Free Press.
It's a sit-down taqueria, and the menu goes well past street tacos: birria tacos, quesadillas, egg rolls and ramen with consommé, plus a great salsa macha. Expect a waitlist in the evening. Read The Infatuation’s review before you go.
Taco Madre Taqueria: our favourite $2 birria
For our favourite birria tacos, head to Taco Madre Taqueria, a red food truck at 1724 24th Street with picnic tables under a covered patio. Its motto is "Auténtico sabor, hecho con madre." The birria tacos are $2 each. Other tacos go up to $4, but go with the birria. It's cash only, so bring US dollars.

More tacos on another Tuesday
We've barely scratched the surface of the taco scene in Detroit, and there's plenty more to explore. Next up, we're going deep into the Leamington taco scene in another post, on another Tuesday. Stay tuned.
